Treating Gangreene

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Gangrene is a term used to describe the dead tissue that result from the lack of blood flow to affected area due to infections, trauma injuries, or vascular disease. Most often the areas of the body affected by gangrene are extremities such as your toes, fingers, nose, and limbs; on rare occasions, it can appear in muscles and organs. There are two main types of gangrene—dry gangrene and moist gangrene. The Atlanta Medical Academy teaches courses pertaining to treatment of necrosis. Dry gangrene is a gradual process that is caused by reduced blood flow through the arteries. These blockages are sometime associated with underlying health issues such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and other genetic factors. The result of dry gangrene is the skin turns black and hard and the cells are sloughed off. Moist gangrene is typically the result of an untreated wound on the body. White blood cells cannot reach the affected area to fight off the infection and the tissue dies resulting in necrosis. A very rare type of moist gangrene called gas gangrene results when a bacteria, Clostridia, infects the wound and emits a poisonous toxins and gas. Gangrene is a serious medical issue and needs to be dealt with swiftly by medical professionals. See a physician immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms: a wound that does not heal quickly, the wound or area around the wound turns blue or black, a foul smelling discharge from the wound, or you have an unexplained fever or pain. Several factors play into the treatment given to a patient with gangrene. Depending the area of the gangrene, the patients overall health at the time, and the cause (was it bacterial or reduced blood flow), treatments may vary. Consult your doctor for an appointment if you think you have Gangrene.
